To be considered an expert of anythingmay take years of careful study under watchful guidance to achieve. Or it could just be as simple as a skill that is slowly built up over time. Skills are gained through hard work and even without a person's knowledge. A person’s own unique skill set that they have makes them an individual. Then from that skill set an individual can consider themselves or is known as an expert in one or more areas. That is the special thing about an expertise; It does not always have to be a widely known matter. It can be a personal decision. That is what I feel my expertise is; just something that I can do well and that I am proud of. That expertise is in listening.
Silence; It is a virtue in this hectic world of ours. I find solace in just sitting back and taking everything in. I love to listen. I suppose you could call me an expert in it. Listening to the world and listening to other people, it is amazing what you will discover. Actions and words mean something entirely different to someone not involved.
Ever since I was a child I always had a tendency to listen. I found that the less I talked the happier adults were. I doubt anyone likes a screaming child in their face all the time. So from a young age I liked to just sit back and observe. It was my own choosing, not my parents. I was shy back then and I still am, but now I am much more open. I do know it is not always the best idea to be silent. I have just found that I learn more when I have a chance to observe everything. Being involved and to be heard is important, I will not deny that. But not being a part of a situation lets me see clearly what is occurring. An outsider, that’s what I am. I guess it’s not the best title, but it’s mine when I want it to be and that’s what’s important.
Observing and listening to the world is only part of what I do. To my friends this skill has allowed them to disclose everything to me. They find comfort in me. I give them a chance to let all their fears, worries, and doubts out. It helps them melt away the stress and anxiety. And when I am done listening I can offer feedback and helpful advice. I have seen and heard so much that I have a knowledge of situations that other people might not have.
Throughout high school I saw people fall apart in front of me. I never want to see that again. I want to help and I’ve always found that being a good listener has provided that first small step to people. If no one will listen then how can someone who cannot help themselves get comfort? There is no good answer; or at least I haven not found it yet. So I want to be a part of people’s lives during some of the most volatile times in their lives. I want to guide them, and who are better guides than teachers. They are the ones to see the problems first and can offer help or send a person to someone who can help. If a student trusts a teacher amazing things can be achieved. Thus, my dream of becoming a high school teacher was born. Teachers who took the time to listen to me always made the biggest impact on me. I learned more and I was able to make an identity for myself through them. I want to be a teacher that can help students and with my expertise I believe I can.
Experts can be defined in a variety of ways, but what really matters is that an individual identifies their own expertise. No one has to tell me what I am good at. I already know. I am a good listener and listen I shall. I will just keep taking this world in one sound at a time and I will keep helping people with my ability. Sometimes that is all people need; someone like me.
